Certificate in Economic Theory and Quantitative Methods Introduction The department offers a Certificate in Economic Theory and Quantitative Methods to qualified undergraduates. This certificate provides a solid background for students planning to pursue graduate studies in economics. The development of modern economics relies substantially on quantitative methods thus a serious knowledge in statistics and mathematics is essential to a successful performance in graduate school. Such preparation is also becoming increasingly relevant in the workfield and in areas as diverse as business administration, finance, operations research, demography, epidemiology etc. Requirements Students interested in this certificate are required to take one year of college calculus (MATH 124,125,126 or equivalent), and are urged, though not required, to take the honors sections of Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON 300) and Intermediate Macroeconomics (ECON 301). To qualify for the certificate, students must complete two advanced theory courses as follows:

Students must earn minimum grades of 2.8 in both ECON 400 and ECON 401, and must average no less than 2.8 for all four classes. Students planning to apply to graduate school in economics should seek advice from their instructors concerning additional mathematics courses recommended for graduate work.
