International Exchange Program In Economics
With Tilburg University
The Netherlands

Tilburg University is specialized in human and social sciences. It is ranked as the best University in the Netherlands and it claims one of the top European research center in economics. Tilburg University has a number of exchanges with various European and oversea universities; they admit over 200 foreign students per year through various exchange programs. They are well geared to hosting exchange students. The city of Tilburg is quite manageable and students who only speak
English will not have much language difficulties in the Netherlands.

Tilburg program offers a wide variety of courses in English that would be of interest to US students. They offer a number of courses on the European Economy: European monetary integration, European labor markets etc. They also offer courses on international economics and finance, on competition policy etc. Course equivalence with U-W should be easy to figure out. Exchange students can also choose courses in other social sciences or in business. In addition, students can work toward a Certificate if they wish. In Autumn, by successfully completing a certain number of credits from a specific course list in addition to some electives, they can be eligible for a Certificate in European Economics and Finance and in the Spring, they have the possibility of getting a Certificate in International Economics and Finance. The opportunity of working toward a foreign official Diploma could be very valuable for our students when they go on the job market or apply to graduate school.

The prospect of going to Tilburg is attractive. This university is located in the heart of the European Union, within a few hours of either Amsterdam, Brussels or Northern Germany and it is very close to Maastricht where the Treaty on the European Union was signed. The Brabant is a beautiful region of the Netherlands. You will have plenty of opportunities to visit other countries of Europe and be exposed to the old world!

To apply to the exchange, students need to be economics major, to have completed Econ 300 and 301, and to be in good standing – the department will select the candidates. Like most UW exchange programs, students will pay UW tuition and be responsible for travel and other expenses. For details (scholarship availability, credit transfer etc.) check the International Program and Exchanges website http://ipe.washington.edu/. US students do not have to go for the whole year, they may choose one semester only. You can browse the Tilburg web page for exchange students at http://www.tilburguniversity.nl/prospectivestudents/exchange/ For further questions about the program and about eligibility for applying, contact Michelle Turnovsky at mturn@u.washington.edu or visit the advising office in Condon 413.
