Study Abroad International Exchange Program In Economics With Thammasat University Bangkok , Thailand
Thammasat is the best University in Thailand . All the courses in the International Program are taught in English. The faculty in the economic department is well trained in American style economics. Most of them have US or British PhD, they are fluent in English, and they are aware of the needs and expectations of American undergraduates. The Thammasat program offers a wide variety of courses that would be of interest to US students. Their course on the Thai economy often draws on the Chairman of the Central Bank and the Minister of Finance as guest lecturers (they are both alumni). Another course that would be of interest to US exchange students is a 2-part course in Thai rural development that includes field studies in Thai villages in the second part. Like most economics program in foreign universities, the Thammasat undergraduate program is more specialized than ours. As a result, it includes many advanced courses like introductory mathematical economics, econometrics, differential and integral calculus that would be of interest to our BS candidates. The International Program of Thammasat University already has exchange arrangements with a number of US and other foreign universities. Therefore they have a lot of experience with undergraduates visiting from all around the world. It will also be quite easy to determine equivalence between their courses and ours. To apply to the exchange, students need to have completed Econ 300 and 301 and to be in good standing – the department will select the candidates. Like most U-W exchange programs, students will pay U-W tuition and be responsible for travel and other expenses. For details, check the International Program and Exchanges website http://ipe.washington.edu/ Thammasat is located in a beautiful part of the City, close to the Grand Palace . The department helps foreign students find apartments within a short distance of the University. Visiting students can get their choice of courses since the International Program might implement a pecking order like us (they have 400 majors). US students do not have to come for the whole year, they may choose to go for one semester only. The International Program in economics at Thammasat has an elaborate Web page that you can browse at http://econ.tu.ac.th/be/default.htm . We also have a few brochures about the program that are available in Condon 413. For further questions about the program and about eligibility for applying, contact Michelle Turnovsky at mturn@u.washington.edu or visit the advising office in Condon 413.
