International Exchange Program

In Economics

With the Université de la Méditerranée

Aix-Marseille , France

The Department of Economics has started a new exchange with the University of Marseille in Marseille France.

In 1413, a decision by Louis II de Provence created the Université d’Aix-Marseille. During the revolution in 1791, the university was split into various faculty located in Aix-en-Provence and in Marseille (two cities within 10 miles of each other). There are now three separate universities: our exchange is with Aix-Marseille II and the courses are offered mainly in Marseille. A-M II welcomes on average 2,500 foreign students making up 12% of the student body of 22,000 students. The Magistère in the department of economic sciences and business is our direct partner. The Department of Economics is affiliated with a well-known research center, GREQAM “Groupement de Recherche en Economie Quantitative d’Aix-Marseille” consistently ranked as one of the five top research centers in economics in France and host to economists visiting from Europe and the US . This has a very positive impact on the strength of the department. The majority of the Marseille exchanges are with European universities through the Erasmus program so they are indeed well geared to hosting exchange students and this will be a unique opportunity to meet students from diverse European countries.

The Department of Economics offers a variety of courses similar to those offered in our department: course equivalencies with UW should be easy to figure out. They also offer courses in policy and business courses. The lectures are in French, some of the assigned textbooks or readings are in English, and many professors are fluent in English. Students interested by this exchange should have a good command of the French language.

Marseille is located in a beautiful region of France : in Provence on the shore of the Mediterranean . It was founded by the Phenicians some 3,000 years ago. Marseille is a very exciting and lively city to visit. The area is studded with Greek and Roman ruins: in Aix-en-Provence , Arles , Nîmes... The Mediterranean coast is stunningly beautiful. You will have plenty of opportunities to visit other countries of Europe and be exposed to the old world!

To apply to the exchange, a student needs to be an economics major, have completed Econ 300 and 301, and be in good standing – the department will select the candidates. Like most UW exchange programs, students will pay UW tuition and be responsible for travel and other expenses. For details on studying abroad (scholarship availability, financial aid, credit transfer etc.), check the International Program and Exchanges website http://ipe.washington.edu/ US students do not have to go for the whole year, they may choose one semester only.
