Housing

For information concerning housing, both on and off campus, you may contact the University of Washington's On-Campus Housing website or the Off-Campus Housing website.

Student Health Insurance

A Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan is available to students and their dependents. Annual premiums range from approximately $744 (student only) to $2,952 (student, spouse or domestic partner & children). An information brochure about the plan is available for you to pick up at many campus locations, including Schmitz Hall and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. This brochure is also available on the web: UW Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan brochure. International students must subscribe to the Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan unless you show proof that you are covered by another plan.

Students holding departmental teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships are eligible for the Graduate Appointee Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan, which is paid for by the University. For more information, visit the Human Resources Benefits Office web page or contact them by email at benefits@u.washington.edu.

International Students

Students from other nations make up approximately one-third of our incoming class each year. We welcome qualified applicants from other countries, as well as foreign citizens attending or holding degrees from American universities. Both Seattle and the University have populations drawn from many countries. International students may find this a distinct advantage in choosing our graduate program.

FIUTS (Foundation for International Understanding Through Students), a community non-profit organization established on the University of Washington campus in 1948, does a terrific job of linking University of Washington international students, visitors and scholars with the Puget Sound Community. FIUTS provides opportunities for cross-cultural friendship through host families, education outreach, Wednesday lunches, trips, tours and more. We encourage you to visit the FIUTS website to learn more about their programs.

The Guide to Life at the University of Washington

The Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) at the University has prepared The Guide to Life at the University of Washington. This guide is an excellent resource to the campus and surrounding communities. It is a student-oriented introduction to the campus and the city. The Guide to Life at the University of Washington is provided for newly admitted graduate students online at the GPSS website. More information about The Guide and GPSS is provided for new students at the orientations in September.
